My hair has grown to the length of a pony-tail. That is something I have wanted since a young teenager, but it wasn't until I left the control of my mother and the swimming pool that I was able to really grow it out. I had started with a completely shaven head the week of high school graduation, and now three years later have it in a pony-tail. I only need one more inch before I can cut it off (back to the complete buzz) for Locks of Love.
Last summer I fell head over heals for my then steady girl-friend, only to be dropped when she turned 21 and realized how much she needed to be a single girl who could go out with friends and do all that stuff that young single women do. I was then forced, happily forced in a way, to remain friends with her beacuse we are in the same studio section and consequently see each other all day every day. I had a rough few months, suffered some slight depression, some serious lack of motivation, and spent a lot of time questioning pretty much everything about me, my life, and my current career path. Thanks to a wonderful spring internship session, that allowed me to enjoy some much needed seperation from my ex, and a swift kick in the arse from my parents and a couple of my professors I have returned to school this summer refreshed and motivated to do quality work and move on with my life.
Now that you're caught up...
In an attempt to rekindle my creativity and love for photography, I am taking an introductory fashion photography class this summer. It's nice to have a class where I can focus purely on photography for the sake of photography and not needing to think about it as it needs to be applied to a design.
For my design photography class, which we have to use a 4x5 view camera, I am doing a series of architectural studies. The photographs have to be bound into a book with captions (or some form of text). I am currently contemplating what the text will actually be. One idea involves dramatic, heroic quotes from comic books that would hopefully bring an interesting juxopisition to the heroic quality of the architecture. Another is to make the photographs more enigmatic and accompany them with small narratives that relate and expand on the images.
For my next internship I am currently researching the possibility of working at a typehouse. Since my typography classes a year and a half ago, I have developed a strong passion for letterforms. I have been told "not to waste my valuable internships" on a typehouse, but I'm rather sick of trying to fit into the little cookie cutter of a designer they like to stamp out. Not to mention I am geniunely interested in typography as a careerthere is a huge need these days in developing digital typefaces that work across all platforms: television, computer, and mobile devices. The current collection of typefaces used on mobile devices is horrendous and someone needs to step forward and lead the development of "mobile type" (Nokia has done well by creating a brand based on a typeface specifically designed for their phones).
So, who knows what lays ahead these days. At the suggestion of my father, and with a great sigh of relief, I have stopped trying to dictate where I am going to be in the next few years. I'm just going to start chasing after what interests me and not what I think is going to make me a successful and popular designer that might one day change the world.
Now, back to work I go...

Hope your special day is a good one!
